Are you an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer seeking an opportunity to make a genuine impact within the rapidly growing environmental technology sector? A leading organisation specialising in innovative environmental products and services is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join their expanding Newry-based team. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of sustainable engineering, contributing to the design and development of products and systems that support cleaner, more efficient industrial and environmental processes.
Your new role
- Design and model components, assemblies, and systems in SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
- Lead/assist the design of injection-moulded parts: DFM/DFA, draft, wall thickness, ribs, bosses, snap-fits, and tolerance stacks.
- Prepare 2D drawings (.dxf, .slddrw), 3D step file (.step), GD&T, and BOMs; manage specifications and documentation.
- Work with toolmakers and suppliers on tooling design, gate/runner strategy, cooling, and part validation.
- Support development, prototyping, and validation of new models.
- Conduct site surveys of commercial kitchens; measure, assess installation requirements, and create accurate drawings.
- Collaborate with Production, R&D, and Installation teams to improve product performance and manufacturability.
- Participate in testing, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of existing designs.
- Ensure compliance with relevant standards, codes, and safety regulations.
What you'll need to succeed
- Degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, SolidWorks (essential) and Vcarve/ Vcarve Pro.
- Proven injection moulding experience (essential):
- End-to-end plastic part design for injection moulding (consumer/industrial preferred).
- Strong DFM/DFA practices and tolerance analysis; understanding of common polymers (e.g., PP, ABS, PA).
- Exposure to tooling considerations and collaboration with mould/tool vendors through to T0/T1/T2.
- Confident conducting on-site surveys and liaising with clients/contractors.
- Experience in product design, manufacturing, or mechanical systems.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Able to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team.
- Passion for innovation, sustainability, and practical engineering.
