Level 3 SEN Teaching Assistant St Helens

We are currently supporting a primary school in St Helens in their search for a committed and experienced Level 3 SEN Teaching Assistant to join their dedicated Resource Base provision. This position is initially a 4 week contract with the possibility to be extended and is set to start after the October half term. The role involves working with a small group of six children, five of whom are boys in Years 3 and 4, presenting with complex needs and challenging behaviour.

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing consistent and nurturing support, helping pupils to access learning and manage their emotions and behaviour. A strong understanding of Trauma Informed Practice is essential, as is the ability to build trusting relationships and respond calmly and effectively to challenging situations. The school is specifically looking for someone with proven strength in de-escalation techniques and a resilient, empathetic approach to behaviour management.

Key responsibilities:
  • Support a small group of KS2 pupils (Years 3 and 4) with complex needs and challenging behaviour in a dedicated Resource Base.
  • Assist in delivering personalised learning activities under the guidance of the class teacher and SENCO.
  • Implement and maintain a Trauma Informed Approach in all interactions with pupils.
  • Use effective de-escalation strategies to manage incidents of dysregulation and emotional distress.
  • Support pupils during transitions, break times, and other unstructured parts of the school day.
  • Help pupils develop emotional regulation, social skills, and positive behaviour.
  • Maintain accurate records of pupil progress, behaviour incidents, and support strategies.
  • Contribute to review meetings and liaise with external professionals when required.
  • Create a safe, structured, and nurturing learning environment tailored to individual needs.
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils, staff, and families.

What you'll need to succeed

  • Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification (or equivalent).
  • Proven experience working with children with complex needs and challenging behaviour.
  • Strong understanding and practical application of Trauma Informed Practice.
  • Ability to build trust and rapport with pupils and staff.
  • Resilience, patience, and a genuine passion for supporting children with SEN.
  • Experience with de-escalation strategies
  • Full right to work in the UK
  • Enhanced DBS on the update service or willing to obtain one
