Lead R&D Design Engineer – Crushing and Screening

Your New Company

Hays Engineering are recruiting for an engineering company in Co Tyrone, for a Lead R&D Design Engineer. In this role you will be heavily responsible for leading new product development, from initial concept to final production, by identifying new technologies, designing prototypes, and managing the R&D process. The job requires a strong technical background in engineering, leadership skills to guide a team, and expertise in CAD/CAE and data analysis for at least the next 5 years. Key duties include research, material selection, prototype testing, and cross-functional team leadership to ensure projects meet technical, cost, and time objectives.

Your New Role

  • Lead product development: Take ownership of the entire R&D process for new products, from initial idea to market release.
  • Conduct research: Identify, investigate, and evaluate new ideas, technologies, and materials for their performance and stability.
  • Design and prototype: Create and refine product designs using CAD/CAE software, build prototypes, and perform testing and data analysis to optimise them.
  • Manage projects: Lead and manage R&D projects, working collaboratively with cross-functional teams to meet project goals, deadlines, and budgets.
  • Oversee testing: Manage product and component testing, ensuring designs meet customer needs and regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate and communicate: Work with senior management, other departments (e.g., manufacturing, commercial), and external vendors and clients.
  • Ensure quality and compliance: Develop specifications and test methods, and ensure compliance with all relevant health, safety, and quality policies.
  • Necessary skills and qualifications
  • Education: Typically requires an engineering degree (e.g., mechanical, electronic).
  • Technical skills: Strong knowledge of engineering principles, CAD/CAE, and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) is essential.
  • Analytical skills: Proficiency in data analysis, complex problem-solving, and using mathematical modelling.
  • Leadership and soft skills: Excellent communication, organisational skills, time management, and the ability to lead and motivate a team.
  • Software proficiency: Strong computer literacy, including experience with main software packages, Microsoft Office Suite, and specialised engineering software.
  • Experience: Significant experience in R&D and product development, often including leadership experience.
What you'll Need to Succeed

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
  • 5 years’ experience in R&D/Product development
  • Experience managing/leading a team of engineers
  • Strong background in crushing and screening
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor)
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and materials
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Effective communicator and team player
