Interim Head of Repairs & Maintenance, 6-month contract, £650 - £700 p/day Umbrella, hybrid working

Your new company

A local authority client in London is seeking an experienced and strategic Head of Responsive Repairs to lead a large-scale housing repairs and maintenance service. This is a critical leadership role overseeing a responsive repairs operation serving approximately 17,500 residents (tenants and leaseholders), with a service budget of £15–20 million.

You will be responsible for driving service transformation, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations, and delivering high-quality, customer-focused repairs and maintenance services. This role requires strong leadership, contract management expertise, and a deep understanding of housing legislation and regulatory standards.

Your new role

  • Lead the delivery of responsive repairs, disrepair, damp & mould, voids, and estate improvement services.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory duties including LGSR, FRA repairs, Legionella, Asbestos, and water hygiene.
  • Manage contractor relationships, ensure KPIs are met, and customer service standards are upheld.
  • Drive service improvement through data analysis, resident feedback, and performance metrics.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to deliver strategic outcomes.
  • Represent the organisation at resident and stakeholder meetings, including evenings when required.
  • Lead and develop staff teams, ensuring performance management and HR policies are followed.
  • Oversee budget planning and financial management aligned with corporate objectives.
  • Contribute to emergency planning and business continuity strategies.

What you'll need to succeed

  • Proven track record of leading large-scale responsive repairs services in a public or private sector setting.
  • Strong experience in contract management, service transformation, and budget oversight.
  • In-depth knowledge of housing legislation, regulatory standards, and compliance requirements.
  • Experience working in politically sensitive environments and engaging with diverse stakeholders.
  • Relevant qualifications such as CIH Level 5, RICS, NEBOSH/IOSH, or equivalent.
  • Project management certification (e.g., Prince2, PMP) and formal leadership training (e.g., ILM Level 5).
  • Strategic leadership and team management.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement.
  • Data-driven decision-making and performance monitoring.
  • Collaborative working across departments and with external partners.
