HMO Licencing Officer - Birmingham City Council - Full Time - Temporary ongoing role
Your new company
Birmingham City Council is committed to ensuring safe and compliant housing standards across the city. You will join the Housing team responsible for licencing and monitoring Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs), helping to protect tenants and uphold legal requirements.
Your new role
As an HMO Licencing Officer, you will review and process licence applications for both small HMOs under additional licencing and large HMOs under mandatory licencing. You will investigate properties suspected of operating without a licence, which includes carrying out unannounced visits and writing up cases where breaches are identified. Approximately six property visits per month are expected, and you will use provided templates to prepare reports and refer breaches to the panel. This role requires confidence, professionalism, and the ability to challenge appropriately while maintaining safety and integrity.
What you'll need to succeed
To succeed in this role, you must be confident and resilient, able to work in a challenging environment without being intimidated. Strong communication skills are essential, along with the ability to disengage appropriately when needed. You should have excellent attention to detail, be IT literate, and capable of using multiple systems to track and manage information. Strong written skills are required for preparing reports and formal statements. An understanding of criminal offences relevant to housing is important, and experience in the private rental sector or similar housing background is preferred. A driving licence is desirable but not essential. A basic DBS check will be required.
What you'll get in return
You will receive a competitive pay rate of £20.27 per hour inclusive of holiday allowance and the opportunity to work in a hybrid model, with a dependable office base at Ashted Lock. This role offers valuable experience in housing compliance and enforcement within one of the UK’s largest local authorities.
