Local Authority - Birmingham City Council - Highway Enforcement Officer - Temporary role

Your new company

Birmingham City Council is one of the UK’s largest local authorities, committed to maintaining safe, accessible, and compliant public spaces. As part of its ongoing efforts to ensure the city’s highways are free from obstruction and misuse, the council is recruiting a Highway Enforcement Officer for a short-term contract with the potential for extension—and even the opportunity to apply for a permanent role based on performance - not guaranteed.

Your new role

As a Highway Enforcement Officer, you will be responsible for identifying and addressing obstructions, encroachments, and non-compliant use of the city’s highways and roads. This includes monitoring businesses and vehicles that may be in breach of regulations. You will collect evidence, follow up on cases, and ensure appropriate enforcement actions are taken. You’ll be trained on relevant enforcement legislation, which is straightforward to learn, and you’ll be paired with a buddy for support during your duties.
This role offers flexible working, and you’ll have the freedom to commute from home or the office to wherever you’re needed most, it is whatever suits you best. Due to this, a valid driving licence is preferred.

What you'll need to succeed

You should be observant, confident in dealing with the public, and capable of working independently while also being a reliable team player. A driving licence is not essential but may be beneficial for commuting between locations. Prior enforcement experience is necessary, but you will be trained on highway legislation.

What you'll get in return

You’ll receive a competitive hourly rate with holiday pay included, flexible working arrangements, and the chance to gain valuable experience in a public-facing enforcement role. If you perform well, there may be an opportunity for contract extensions or to apply for a permanent position within the council.
