Health & Safety Manager

Hays Health & Safety are excited to be working with a leading packaging manufacturer in St Helens to find a confident and capable Health & Safety Manager to take charge at a large-scale production and warehousing site. This is a key leadership role, managing an internal Health & Safety team and driving a proactive safety culture across a complex, high-volume operation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the site’s safety agenda, ensuring all operational areas meet and exceed legal and internal standards.
  • Manage and develop a team of two safety coordinators and one H&S administrator, providing guidance, structure, and support.
  • Deliver engaging safety communications, training, and awareness initiatives tailored to operational needs.
  • Oversee risk assessments, incident investigations, and corrective actions, ensuring continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with site leadership to assess the safety impact of operational changes and new processes.
  • Coordinate external audits, inspections, and contractor safety compliance.
  • Maintain internal audit schedules and reporting aligned with ISO 45001 and 14001 standards.
  • Chair regular safety meetings and contribute to strategic planning for site-wide improvements.

What You’ll Bring
  • NEBOSH Certificate or Diploma (or equivalent qualification in occupational safety).
  • Strong background in manufacturing, ideally within packaging or FMCG environments.
  • Practical experience with machinery safety, warehousing, and contractor management.
  • Familiarity with ISO 45001 and 14001 frameworks.
  • Confident communicator with the ability to influence and engage across all levels.
  • Skilled in using digital tools for reporting, analysis, and training coordination.
  • Proven line management experience with the ability to coach and develop others.

What's on offer?
Alongside up to £60,000 base salary you will be eligible for the organisation's bonus scheme of up to 10%, 25 days Annual leave + Bank Holidays and an enhanced pension.
