Your new role

As the Head of Law (People), you will lead a team of at least 15 legal professionals specialising in Social Care (Adults, Children, and Education) and Litigation. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Legal Services, you will provide strategic leadership, manage complex legal matters, and ensure the delivery of efficient, customer-focused legal services.
You will work closely with senior leaders across the organisation, offering expert legal advice and building trusted relationships to support service priorities. You’ll also contribute to the wider management of the Legal and Democratic Services department, helping to shape its vision and drive innovation.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Leading and developing a high-performing legal team.
  • Managing complex legal cases and overseeing external legal support.
  • Ensuring financial viability and performance targets are met.
  • Advising senior stakeholders, committees, and executive members.
  • Driving service improvement and fostering a positive team culture.
  • Strategic thinking to ensure work is completed efficiently.

What you'll need to succeed

To thrive in this role, you will be a qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or Fellow of CILEX entitled to practise in England and Wales, with significant experience in social care and/or litigation law. You’ll bring:
  • A strong track record of legal leadership in a public sector or similarly complex environment.
  • Excellent influencing and strategic thinking skills.
  • High political awareness and the ability to advise senior stakeholders.
  • Proven experience managing teams, budgets, and performance.
  • A collaborative, solutions-focused approach to legal challenges.
