Job Title: Grounds Maintenance Assistant

Reports To: Facilities Manager (through Lead Groundskeeper)

Location: Belfast

Employment Type: Full-time

About the Role

We are seeking a Grounds Maintenance Assistant to join our facilities team, helping to maintain the school’s grounds and outdoor facilities to a high standard. This role is essential in ensuring a safe, well‑presented environment for pupils, staff, and visitors. The position involves physical outdoor work, sometimes in unfavourable weather conditions, and requires flexibility to support school sports, including occasional work outside normal hours and on Saturdays.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Preparing and maintaining sports areas, including rugby, cricket, and soccer pitches
  • General grounds maintenance: grass cutting, hedge trimming, leaf collection, litter picking, and upkeep of landscaped and perimeter areas
  • Clearing snow and ice from paths and driveways when required
  • Cleaning and maintaining pavilions, changing rooms, showers, toilets, drains, and gutters
  • Operating tools and equipment, including knapsack sprayers, power tools, and tractor‑mounted machinery
  • Erecting and dismantling sports equipment
  • Preparing cricket squares (grass and artificial) to school standards
  • Emptying external litter bins
  • Driving school vehicles (if suitably qualified)
  • Upkeep of compost areas

Other Duties

  • General porterage tasks
  • Supporting teaching staff in maintaining a safe learning environment
  • Any other reasonable duties within the scope of the role

General Conditions

All duties must be carried out in compliance with Health & Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978 and COSHH Regulations.

Essential Criteria

Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Strong numeracy and written communication skills
  • Good attention to detail and accurate record-keeping
  • Ability to manage time efficiently

Desirable Criteria

Qualifications:

  • GCSE Maths and English (Grade C or above) or equivalent
  • Level 2 qualification in Sports Turf / Green keeping
Experience:

  • Recent (within the last 5 years) experience preparing and marking sports pitches (rugby, cricket, etc.)
  • Recent (within the last 5 years) experience working in a school environment
