Flexible Financial Controller role leading finance and improving controls in the commercial healthcare sector

Your new company
My client is a s pecialist organisation operating within the scientific and healthcare support sector. With a dedicated UK team and the backing of a wider European group, the business is strengthening its internal finance capabilities and bringing more responsibility in‑house. This newly created role is central to that development and offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact within a small, collaborative environment.

Your new role
As the Financial Controller, you will take responsibility for leading and developing the finance function, providing technical expertise and ensuring robust financial governance across the business. In this hands‑on and varied role, you will:
  • Produce accurate, timely financial reporting and analysis
  • Maintain strong internal controls and manage statutory obligations
  • Lead successful external audits
  • Improve processes and drive operational efficiencies
  • Support and guide colleagues within the finance team
  • Bring outsourced finance activities in‑house
  • Support R&D tax relief claims
This is a chance to shape the finance function within a growing organisation and to work closely with operational and senior stakeholders.

What you'll need to succeed
To succeed in this role, you will be a fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA or CIMA), ideally with a strong technical grounding and a precise, structured approach to your work. You should be confident in leading audits, producing accurate financial reporting and managing a broad, hands‑on financial remit. Strong communication and leadership skills are important, as you will be supporting and mentoring colleagues within a small team. Experience within a scientific, healthcare or operationally focused environment would be helpful, and familiarity with R&D tax relief processes would be a valuable advantage, though not essential.

What you'll get in return
In return, you will receive a competitive salary alongside a genuinely flexible working arrangement, with the option to work from 20 hours per week up to full‑time. You will enjoy significant autonomy to shape the finance function and influence improvements across the wider organisation. The environment is collaborative, supportive and purpose‑driven.
