Hays are looking to recruit a Financial Controller here in Bristol.

Your new company

Our client is a dynamic and growing SME based in Bristol. With a strong commercial focus and ambitious growth plans, we are seeking a Financial Controller to lead the finance operations and support the Finance Director with strategic decision-making across the business.

Your new role

Reporting to the Finance Director, the Financial Controller will be responsible for managing the day-to-day finance function, ensuring accurate financial reporting, robust controls, and helping with insightful analysis. This is a hands-on role working as a number 2 in a growing business. The role will include:

  • Lead the preparation of monthly management accounts, board packs, and financial reports
  • Ensure compliance with statutory requirements, including VAT and HMRC filings.
  • Maintain and improve internal financial controls and processes.
  • Support the Finance Director with financial modelling, business case development, and commercial analysis.
  • Oversee the year-end audit and liaise with external auditors and advisors.
  • Manage and develop a small finance team.
  • Drive improvements in financial systems and reporting tools.
  • Provide financial insight to support operational and strategic decision-making.

What you'll need to succeed

We are looking for someone:

  • Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent).
  • Proven experience in a Financial Controller or similar role within an SME.
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Proactive, adaptable, and comfortable working in a hands-on environment.
