Financial Accountant - University Sector

Job Purpose:
The Year-End Financial Accountant plays a critical role in ensuring the timely and accurate completion of the university’s financial year-end processes. This includes preparing statutory financial statements, liaising with external auditors, and ensuring compliance with relevant accounting standards and sector-specific regulations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Year-End Close Process
    • Lead the preparation and coordination of year-end financial reporting.
    • Ensure all financial transactions are accurately recorded and reconciled.
    • Manage the year-end timetable and deliverables across departments.
  • Financial Statements & Reporting
    • Prepare consolidated financial statements in accordance.
    • Support the production of the annual financial report for stakeholders.
  • Audit & Compliance
    • Act as the primary contact for external auditors during the year-end audit.
    • Provide documentation, explanations, and support to ensure a smooth audit process.
    • Ensure compliance with internal controls and financial regulations

  • Stakeholder Engagement
    • Collaborate with internal departments to gather financial data and resolve queries.
    • Provide guidance and training on year-end procedures and accounting standards.

  • Continuous Improvement
    • Identify opportunities to streamline year-end processes and improve reporting accuracy.
    • Contribute to finance system upgrades and automation initiatives.

Essential:
  • Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent).
  • Experience in preparing statutory accounts and managing audits.
  • Excellent Excel and financial systems skills.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Experience in the higher education or public sector.
  • Understanding of charity accounting and regulatory frameworks.
