Sandwell Council - Environmental Health Officer - Food Safety – 3 month contract – Full Time

Your new company

Sandwell Council is committed to protecting public health and ensuring food businesses operate to the highest standards. You will join a professional and supportive Environmental Health team that plays a vital role in food safety enforcement and compliance.

Your new role

As an Environmental Health Officer within the Food Safety team, you will carry out inspections of food premises to ensure compliance with food hygiene legislation. You will respond to complaints, investigate food safety issues, and provide advice to businesses on best practices. You will have flexibility to manage your own diary across the week, balancing office-based tasks with on-site inspections.
During inspections, you will check hygiene standards, review food storage and preparation practices, examine documentation and ensure staff training and procedures meet legal requirements. Where necessary, you will take enforcement action to protect public health.

What you'll need to succeed

To be successful, you must be a qualified Environmental Health Officer with proven food safety experience. You should be a member of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) and hold a current competency framework document. Experience across categories A, B, C, D, and E is essential, with court experience and drafting legal packs also being desired. You must also hold a valid driving licence and be willing to add business insurance to your policy once a start date is confirmed. Strong communication skills and the ability to manage your workload independently are also key requirements.

What you'll get in return

You will receive a competitive hourly rate of £45 and the opportunity to work with a respected local authority in a role that directly impacts public health. The position offers flexibility in managing your schedule and the chance to gain valuable experience in a dynamic and supportive environment.
