3 month ongoing full-time opportunity as a Waste Enforcement Officer for Birmingham City Council

Your new company

On behalf of Birmingham City Council, we are recruiting Waste Enforcement Officers to support the delivery of effective environmental enforcement across the city. Birmingham City Council is committed to keeping communities clean, safe and sustainable, working proactively to tackle waste‑related issues and improve neighbourhoods for residents, businesses and visitors.

Your new role

This is a three month ongoing opportunity working Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, covering locations across Birmingham. As a Waste Enforcement Officer, you will be responsible for carrying out frontline enforcement activity to address waste offences, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and council policies. The role involves investigating waste‑related incidents, gathering and assessing evidence, issuing appropriate enforcement action where required, and accurately completing all associated documentation. You will engage with members of the public and businesses, provide clear advice on waste responsibilities, and support the council’s wider objectives around cleanliness, sustainability and community wellbeing. You will work in line with legal requirements, surveillance and evidence gathering standards, and ensure all activity is conducted safely, professionally and proportionately.

What you'll need to succeed

To be successful, you will have previous enforcement experience, or strong transferable experience from a similar regulatory, compliance or enforcement background. You will have a good understanding of legislation and procedures relating to waste enforcement, with the ability to gather evidence, assess breaches and apply enforcement powers appropriately. Strong communication skills are essential, as you will be dealing confidently and professionally with the public, businesses and internal stakeholders. You will be well organised, accurate with paperwork, and comfortable working independently across different locations while adhering to council policies, health and safety requirements, and equality and sustainability principles.

What you'll get in return

In return, you will receive a competitive rate of £24.60 per hour PAYE, inclusive of holiday allowance, equivalent to £21.95 per hour plus holiday pay. You will gain valuable experience working within one of the UK’s largest local authorities, contributing to visible improvements across the city. This role offers stable weekday hours, immediate impact work, and the opportunity to extend your enforcement experience within a public sector environment.
