Interim Deputy Chief Accountant – Local Government | Minimal On-Site Requirement
6 Months Inside ScopeWe’re supporting a forward-thinking local authority to appoint an Interim Deputy Chief Accountant for a 6-month assignment. This is a hands-on, stabilising role designed to support the Chief Accountant and ensure smooth delivery of core finance functions—with only minimal time required on-site each month.
Key Responsibilities:
- Team Support: Provide day-to-day leadership to a high-performing finance team needing interim guidance.
- Audit Delivery: Lead the operational side of the external audit, allowing the Chief Accountant to focus on complex legacy issues.
- Issue Resolution: Own and resolve historic audit and financial items to strengthen the council’s financial position.
- Balance Sheet Oversight: Review and reconcile key accounts to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Strategic Impact: Free up senior leadership to focus on transformation by stabilising operations and clearing the audit backlog.

- Extensive experience in
Local government finance, particularly in audit and financial reporting - Strong
Technical accounting skills, including balance sheet management and reconciliations - A proactive, hands-on approach to resolving
Historic financial and audit issues - Ability to
Lead and support teams
Through periods of change and pressure - Confidence working
independently
With minimal supervision and limited on-site presence - Excellent
Communication and stakeholder management
Skills, especially with auditors and senior leaders
