This is a fantastic opportunity to join this professional & collaborative Public Sector Communications & Engagement team who are committed to open, effective and impactful communication with both internal and external audiences.
Your new role
You will play a crucial role in delivering high-quality, engaging and targeted communications that support the organisation's priorities. Working closely with the Communications Lead, the wider communications team and colleagues across the organisation, you’ll help shape and deliver campaigns that inform, engage and protect communities.
This is a varied and fast‑paced role, combining strategic thinking with hands-on delivery. You’ll develop creative, insight‑driven communication activity across multiple channels, adopt a digital‑first approach, and contribute to both planned campaigns and responsive communications.
Key responsibilities include:
- Developing and delivering targeted communications campaigns aligned to defined objectives
- Creating compelling content in a range of formats for internal and external audiences
- Providing strategic communications advice, influencing and challenging leaders on best practice
- Building strong working relationships across service areas to understand priorities, opportunities and risks
- Managing media engagement, including proactive and reactive liaison with local, national and trade journalists
- Ensuring all communications are on‑brand, on‑message, audience‑focused and delivered in plain English
- Monitoring, evaluating and reporting on communications activity against KPIs
- Supporting communications activity during crisis or emergency situations
- Keeping up to date with communications best practice and new ideas across the profession
What you'll need to succeed
To thrive in this Communications Officer role, you’ll bring a strong foundation in professional communications along with the confidence to operate in a complex, high‑profile public service environment.
You’ll need:
- Proven experience working in a communications role
- Demonstrable experience delivering communications activity across multiple channels
- Strong media relations experience, both proactive and reactive
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor messages to different audiences
- Experience evaluating communications activity and presenting insights clearly to stakeholders
- The ability to manage competing priorities in a fast‑moving environment
- Confidence advising, influencing and persuading stakeholders at all levels
- A high level of integrity, professionalism and discretion when handling sensitive information
- A degree, or equivalent relevant experience
- Strong digital skills and knowledge of modern communications tools and platforms
- An understanding of equality, diversity and inclusive communication
What you'll get in return
This role is offered on an initial 4-month temporary assignment, on a 3 day per week (22.2 hours) basis.
£17.47 Per Hour + Holiday Allowance
