A large University in Birmingham has an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Business Engagement & Development Consultant to join their dynamic team. This role will play a key part in supporting the delivery of initiatives that connect local businesses with graduate talent, helping organisations secure the skills they need to sustain economic growth. Working in partnership with other universities and stakeholders, you will contribute to projects designed to strengthen the regional economy through graduate employment and workforce development.
Your new role
Temporary – 3-4 month contract +
As a Business Engagement & Development Consultant, you will work with a wide range of businesses, from micro-enterprises to global organisations, primarily within the Birmingham Enterprise Zone and surrounding areas. Your focus will be on understanding the skills businesses require to support growth and identifying graduate-level opportunities that align with these needs. You will collaborate closely with employability teams to match graduates to vacancies and ensure successful outcomes through effective relationship management. Taking ownership of business referrals, you will manage their journey from initial contact through to successful engagement, registering businesses onto the programme, conducting detailed skills needs assessments, and analysing requirements to create a pipeline of graduate-level vacancies. You will maintain strong employer relationships through exceptional account management and contribute to marketing and events, using your knowledge of the business landscape to support lead generation and promote the programme. Accurate record-keeping and reporting will be essential, as you will log all activity on the CRM system and prepare monthly reports for the project management team. Building long-term relationships with businesses will be a key aspect of the role, enabling you to identify opportunities for future collaboration and growth.
What you'll need to succeed
The successful candidate will be educated to degree level or possess equivalent experience, with significant expertise in business development, employer engagement, or account management within a professional setting. You will have the ability to tailor your approach to suit businesses of all sizes and sectors, and experience within a Higher Education environment would be advantageous. Strong communication and negotiation skills are essential, along with the ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a target-driven environment. You should have experience in recruitment, networking, and maintaining effective links with employers, as well as a proven track record of delivering excellent customer service. Familiarity with CRM systems and strong IT skills are required, alongside an understanding of equality, diversity, and inclusion principles.
