Hays Education is working in partnership with a number of inclusive and forward-thinking secondary schools across London, supporting students with hearing impairments and additional communication needs. Due to increased demand, we are recruiting dedicated BSL Specialist Teaching Assistants to provide tailored support for deaf and hearing-impaired students.

Your new role

As a BSL Specialist Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in ensuring students with hearing impairments can fully access the curriculum and participate in school life.
You will work closely with teaching staff, SENCOs, and specialist services to provide both academic and communication support, often on a 1:1 basis or within small groups.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Providing British Sign Language (BSL) support for students in mainstream lessons
  • Interpreting spoken content into BSL to support understanding and engagement
  • Supporting students’ communication, language development, and confidence
  • Adapting classroom materials to ensure accessibility
  • Promoting inclusion and participation across all aspects of school life
  • Working collaboratively with teachers and specialist staff to support individual learning plans


What you'll need to succeed

To be successful in this role, you will:
  • Hold a recognised BSL qualification (Level 2 or above preferred)
  • Have experience supporting students with hearing impairments in an educational or similar setting
  • Be patient, proactive, and committed to inclusive education
  • Have strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Be confident working with secondary-aged students (11–16 / 11–18)
  • Hold (or be willing to obtain) an enhanced DBS check
Experience within schools, specialist provisions, or working with deaf learners is highly desirable.
