Bioprocess Engineer
Your new company:
A forward-thinking organisation at the forefront of regenerative biotechnology is seeking a talented Bioprocess Engineer to join its dynamic Research & Development team. This company is dedicated to transforming waste into high-performance materials through innovative biological processes, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
Your new role:
As a Bioprocess Engineer, you will play a key role in designing, modelling, and optimising both upstream and downstream bioprocesses. You’ll be responsible for culturing microorganisms, running upstream fermentation processes, and refining growth media to enhance performance. The role involves preparing biological samples, applying aseptic techniques, and using data-driven methodologies to improve process efficiency. You’ll collaborate closely with experts in engineering, chemistry, and material science to scale up novel biotechnologies from lab to industrial feasibility.
Main Responsibilities:
Biochemical & Process Engineering:
- Design, implement, and optimise downstream processing operations at lab and kilo scale.
- Model and design upstream (fermentation) and downstream processing equipment.
- Operate fermenters from bench scale (~1–10L) to kilo scale (10–500L).
- Culture and characterise a range of microorganisms, including bacteria, yeasts, and fungi.
- Prepare biological samples for sequencing and analyse bioprocess performance.
- Optimise media compositions and growth conditions to enhance yield and efficiency.
- Apply aseptic techniques and model microbial growth and product formation.
- Maintain detailed records using Electronic Laboratory Notebooks (ELNs).
- Apply high-throughput screening and Design of Experiments (DoE) methodologies.
- Conduct statistical analysis and mathematical modelling to evaluate and predict outcomes.
- Use systems-thinking to assess biological processes at multiple scales.
- Collaboration & Innovation
- Work cross-functionally with R&D, engineering, and sustainability teams.
- Contribute to the development of scalable, regenerative biotechnologies.
- Support knowledge-sharing and continuous improvement within the team.
What you'll need to succeed:
- A Master’s degree in Biochemical Engineering, Microbiology, or a related field with 5+ years of industry experience, or a PhD with 2+ years of experience.
- Proven expertise in microbial culturing, fermentation, and downstream bioprocessing.
- Strong skills in experimental design, statistical analysis, and computational modelling.
- Experience with Electronic Laboratory Notebooks (ELNs) and high-throughput screening techniques.
- A collaborative mindset, excellent communication skills, and a systems-thinking approach to solving complex biological challenges.
What you'll get in return: - You’ll be part of a mission-driven team working on cutting-edge technologies with real-world impact.
- The opportunity to contribute to sustainable innovation in biotechnology.
- A collaborative and intellectually stimulating work environment.
- Exposure to transdisciplinary projects with experts across multiple fields.
- A chance to help shape scalable solutions that align natural and cultural systems.
