Local Authority – Assistant Legal Adviser (12 month FTC)
Your new company
This is a unique opportunity to join a high-profile membership organisation at the heart of the local government sector. The organisation plays a pivotal role in shaping national policy, supporting local authorities, and influencing key legal and governance matters across the UK. You’ll be joining a collaborative and mission-driven legal team that supports both internal stakeholders and external partners on issues of national significance.
Your new role
As Assistant Corporate Legal Adviser, you will provide expert legal advice on a wide range of matters including governance, constitutional law, procurement, contracts, and company law. You’ll play a key role in supporting high-priority projects such as public enquiries, strategic litigation, and sector-wide legal initiatives. The role also involves interpreting legislation, drafting legal documents, and advising on compliance and risk. You’ll work closely with senior leadership, external legal advisers, and public sector bodies, while also mentoring junior legal staff and contributing to training and development initiatives.
What you'll need to succeed
Qualified solicitor, barrister, or CILEX lawyer with ideally 5 years’ PQE.
Strong understanding of local government law and the wider public sector legal landscape.
Proven ability to manage complex legal matters with political sensitivity and strategic insight.
Excellent drafting, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
Experience advising on governance, contracts, procurement, and regulatory compliance.
Ability to work autonomously, manage competing priorities, and deliver high-quality legal services under pressure.
What you'll get in return
The chance to work on nationally significant legal issues that shape public policy and governance.
A supportive, flexible working environment with hybrid arrangements.
Exposure to high-level strategic legal work and the opportunity to influence sector-wide outcomes.
A collaborative team culture that values innovation, integrity, and professional development.
Competitive salary and benefits package.
