Local Authority - Assistant Housing Officer - Temporary ongoing role - Birmingham City Council - Full time

Your new company

Birmingham City Council is one of the UK’s largest local authorities, delivering essential housing services to communities across the city. As part of its commitment to strengthening its presence on estates and improving tenant engagement, the council is recruiting an Assistant Housing Officer to join the team based in Northfield (B31).

Your new role

This is a full-time role working Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, with a 35-hour working week. The position offers a hybrid working model, combining office-based duties, home working, and on-site visits. You’ll be supporting Housing Officers by carrying out initial checks on cases such as succession, unlawful occupiers, abandonments, and mutual exchanges. You’ll also be responsible for handling low-level anti-social behaviour cases and conducting proactive visits to tenants.
These visits are a core part of the role and involve checking properties, ensuring tenant wellbeing, making referrals where needed, and responding to tenancy-related queries. You’ll be expected to manage a variety of cases and contribute to the council’s goal of increasing visibility and support across its estates. The role is offered on a six-month contract, with a possibility of extensions, and requires an
Enhanced DBS check. Hays will sort this with you with your correspondence.

What you'll need to succeed

To succeed in this role, you’ll need to be organised, proactive, and confident in dealing with tenants and tenancy-related matters. While driving is preferred, it is not essential, and public transport costs will be reimbursed for visits. You should be comfortable working in a fast-paced, KPI-driven environment and have a strong sense of responsibility and time management. A positive attitude and willingness to support both tenants and colleagues are key. Prior social housing experience is desired.

What you'll get in return

You’ll receive a competitive pay rate of £12.60 per hour plus holiday allowance, totalling £14.12 per hour for the first 13 weeks. After this period, the rate increases to £14.32 per hour plus holiday allowance, totalling £16.77 per hour. You’ll be part of a supportive team making a real impact in local communities, with opportunities for contract extension and professional development.
