Your new company

Working for a large public organisation that provides analytical & diagnostic services, research & development, and scientific training & advice within agriculture, food production, animal and plant health, marine and freshwater ecosystems and the agri-environment.

The successful applicant will report to the Pig Unit Manager and liaise closely with scientific staff and external support providers.

The post holder will support the Pig Unit Manager in all day-to-day tasks as well as herd and resource management, including administration, data compilation and procurement of goods and services.

Your new role

Specific responsibilities of the post holder and the Pig Unit operations consist of the following:

1. Supervision of dry house operations (i.e., gilts and weaned sows insemination, gestation confirmation, gestation and movement to the farrowing house, fertility/farrowing rate).
2. Supervision of mill operations (i.e., H&S and maintenance of the mill, ingredients procurement and diet preparation for monogastric trials).
3. Overseeing of records' digitalisation, improvement of data transfer processes (i.e., Sow/gilt ‘electronic sow feeder’ data download) and collation of key performance indicators (KPIs).
4. Supervision and co-ordination of NACWO activities within our group.
5. Sow herd management to maximise performance includes feeding, rationing, fertility management, heat detection, insemination, pregnancy scanning, administration of medications, tagging and record keeping.
6. Management of sow feed systems, data entry for sow rationing, compiling data generated for feed intakes and weight measurement. Management of gestating and lactating sows with appropriate rationing and according to experimental protocols where relevant.
7. Management of animal flow through sow housing and farrowing accommodation according to stage of production with appropriate implementation of experimental protocols. Assisting sows with farrowing, recording all relevant litter data, appropriate drug administration at all stages of lactation as required.
8. Maintaining high animal health and welfare standards across all stages of sow and pig production, including identifying and treating sick animals, routine health management, vaccination, provision of enrichment, and assisting veterinary practitioners.
9. Maintaining the overall cleanliness and tidiness of the Pig Unit, including cleaning, power washing, disinfecting, bedding and animal housing

What you'll need to succeed

Two GCSEs, including English and Maths, (grades A*-C) or equivalent.

Demonstrate, by way of example, at least 12 months' experience of working in a sow breeding unit over 100 sows and active participation in tasks such as feeding management, breeding, management of weaned pigs.

Demonstrate, by way of examples, experience in all the following:

  1. Sow, gilt and weaned pig feeding and nutrition requirements
  2. Heat detection/Fertility, pregnancy scanning
  3. General livestock husbandry skills, including animal health and welfare and having knowledge of sustainable farming principles.
  4. Operation of a feed mill for commercial/ experimental diet production.

Experience in teamwork.

Have a full UK driving licence which enables the holder to drive a car in Northern Ireland.
