This is an exciting opportunity to join a progressive and values-driven local authority legal team that is committed to delivering high-quality, cost-effective legal services. The organisation is known for its inclusive culture, agile working practices, and a strong focus on professional development. You’ll be part of a legal service that plays a vital role in supporting the delivery of essential public services and protecting the rights of residents.
Your new role
As an Advocate (Litigation), you will be at the forefront of delivering expert legal representation for the organisation across a wide range of courts and tribunals. You will manage a diverse and challenging caseload, primarily focused on housing litigation—including homelessness, anti-social behaviour, disrepair, and leasehold disputes—as well as regulatory and prosecution matters.
Key responsibilities include:
- Representing the organisation in County and Magistrates Courts, and before First-Tier and Upper Tribunals.
- Advising on legal strategy, litigation risk, evidence, and negotiation tactics.
- Providing urgent legal advice and representation, including out-of-hours support when required.
- Acting as a role model and mentor to junior legal staff.
- Contributing to policy development and representing the legal service on internal working groups.
This role is pivotal in reducing reliance on external counsel and establishing an in-house centre of excellence for advocacy.
What you'll need to succeed
You will be a qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or FILEX Advocate (ideally with Higher Rights of Audience), with:
- Significant experience in advocacy, particularly in County and Magistrates Courts.
- In-depth knowledge of housing law and the ability to develop expertise in related areas such as local authority prosecutions.
- Strong analytical, written, and oral communication skills.
- A proactive, solutions-focused approach to legal advice and representation.
- The ability to work collaboratively with senior officers, councillors, and external stakeholders.
What you'll get in return
In return, you’ll join a supportive and forward-thinking legal team that values innovation, inclusion, and continuous improvement. You’ll benefit from:
- A competitive salary with market factor enhancement.
- Flexible and agile working arrangements.
- Opportunities for professional growth and leadership.
- A culture that champions equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- The chance to make a real impact in a borough that is ambitious for its residents and committed to excellence in public service.
