Your new role

The Accounts Assistant will support a small but busy accountancy practice with day-to-day bookkeeping, client accounting, and administrative tasks. The role is ideal for someone who is organised, numerate, and comfortable working across multiple client files.

Key Responsibilities

Bookkeeping & Client Accounting
  • Maintain accurate bookkeeping records for a portfolio of clients.
  • Process purchase invoices, sales invoices, receipts, and payments.
  • Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and petty cash.
  • Prepare VAT returns in line with Making Tax Digital requirements.
  • Assist with month‑end and year-end processes.
  • Maintain fixed asset registers and post journals where required.
Making Tax Digital (MTD)
  • Ensure all VAT submissions comply with HMRC’s MTD rules.
  • Support clients in transitioning to and using MTD‑compatible software.
  • Troubleshoot basic MTD connection issues and liaise with software providers if needed.
  • Maintain digital records in accordance with HMRC guidelines.
Accounts Preparation
  • Assist in preparing working papers for year‑end accounts.
  • Support senior accountants with drafting accounts for sole traders, partnerships, and limited companies.
  • Prepare basic management accounts where required.
Client Support & Administration
  • Act as a first point of contact for client bookkeeping queries.
  • Maintain organised digital and paper filing systems.
  • Assist with onboarding new clients, including AML checks and software setup.
What you'll need to succeed

  • Experience in bookkeeping within an accountancy practice environment.
  • Working knowledge of cloud accounting platforms (e.g., Xero, QuickBooks, Sage).
  • Understanding of Making Tax Digital for VAT.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Good Excel/Google Sheets skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple client deadlines.
  • Experience preparing VAT returns and basic accounts.
