A rapidly scaling construction and civil engineering organisation based in West Cumbria is seeking an Accounts Assistant to strengthen its finance function. This is a newly created role driven by continued expansion, offering an excellent chance to join a stable and forward-thinking business.

Your new role

Reporting to the Finance Manager and collaborating with operational departments, you will assist with a range of core finance activities. The role is pivotal in ensuring accurate record-keeping, smooth transactional processing, and effective financial administration across the business.

Key duties will typically include:
  • Processing high volume purchase ledger with accuracy
  • Reconcile supplier accounts, investigate discrepancies and deal with related queries from customers in a timely manner.
  • Bank reconciliations and support month-end close tasks
  • Collate payroll-related administration and subcontractor payment processes
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of finance processes and systems
  • Contribute to VAT preparation and maintain up-to-date financial records
  • Provide general finance assistance across various departments
  • Develop strong working relationships with suppliers, subcontractors, and internal colleagues

What you'll need to succeed

  • Experience within a fast-moving finance department or accountancy practice
  • High attention to detail and strong organisational capability
  • Ability to manage competing priorities effectively
  • Clear communication skills and a proactive, solutions-focused mindset
  • Familiarity with systems such as Xero or knowledge of CIS (beneficial but not required)
  • AAT qualification or progress towards it (preferred)
  • Previous exposure to sectors such as construction, engineering, or utilities would be advantageous, though not essential.
