Materials scientist, growing biotech company in London. 18mth FTC converting to permanent

Your new company
You’ll be joining a pioneering organisation dedicated to advancing sustainable technologies through innovative chemical process development. Your new role
As a Materials Development Scientist, you will lead the discovery and optimisation of novel bio-based materials through high-throughput experimentation and data-driven research. You’ll play a key role in developing sustainable products and systems, collaborating across disciplines to drive innovation and deliver impactful solutions. This is a hands-on, lab-based role with a strong emphasis on experimentation, data analysis, and cross-functional teamwork.
This is initially an 18-month Fixed-Term Contract position that has a good chance of converting to a permanent role afterwards.

Main Responsibilities:
Innovative Experimentation & Research
  • Design and execute high-throughput experiments to develop and optimise bio-based materials.
  • Conduct laboratory-scale experiments from conception to completion with scientific rigour.
  • Analyse experimental data and provide actionable insights to improve product and process performance.

Collaboration & Communication
  • Work closely with material scientists, engineers, and product developers to ensure successful project outcomes.
  • Communicate complex scientific concepts clearly through technical reports, documentation, and presentations.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment.
  • Continuous Learning & Development
  • Stay up to date with advancements in materials chemistry and bio-based technologies.
  • Integrate new research insights into ongoing projects to drive innovation.
  • Maintain meticulous records of experimental work and ensure data integrity.


What you'll need to succeed
  • MSc / MEng in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or a related field with a preference for a PhD – or equivalent experience
  • Proven track record in materials discovery and product development, ideally with bio-based materials. Candidates with industry experience of this are highly preferred
  • Proficiency in high-throughput experimentation, DoE, statistical analysis, and mathematical modelling.
  • Strong analytical thinking, systems-thinking mindset, and excellent communication skills.
  • Passion for sustainability, innovation, and regenerative design.
