As we look towards 2018, it is evident that some roles are facing far greater skill shortages than before, are commanding higher salary increases and are likely to continue to have high demand over the coming year.
The world of work is transforming and whilst we hear a lot about the impact of automation and the evolution of technology, for many of the professionals that we deal with, this is fuelling greater demand for these niche skills, rather than taking away jobs. I certainly haven’t yet come across a robot who is able to use humour, enthusiasm and empathy to get a team on board with a new idea.
In our recent survey we found that over half of the UK workforce (55%) plans to look for new job opportunities next year and close to three-quarters (71%) of employers are planning to hire in 2018. On the one hand, this means that there will be a lot of jobseekers, resulting in a highly competitive market for these candidates. On the other hand, it also means new opportunities will be opening up all the time, meaning that candidates with the right skills and experience will be able to secure new opportunities.
Both jobseekers and employers need to understand where these opportunities are for 2018, so they can factor it into their plans. The roles that are in highest demand will naturally warrant larger salaries and it is likely that the candidates will be more difficult to find due to the skills shortages.
When evaluating the hot jobs for 2018 we looked at where demand is likely to be highest – largely due to new or ongoing investment in these areas. Is your job on the most wanted list for the year ahead? Or are you likely to be recruiting for one of these roles?

It’s clear from the list, that professionals in digital technology, finance and construction have a particularly positive outlook for 2018. However, that’s not to say that you need to sit tight if your job doesn’t appear on the 2018 list. The particular roles that are in high demand can vary according to location. For example, there are some clear digital hot spots around the UK, which are fuelling demand for professionals with digital skills.
Candidates also shouldn’t underestimate the importance of the softer transferable skills that make you more adaptable and can mean that, even without much experience, you could be successful in a role. I come across candidates all the time who underestimate the importance of selling these soft skills, both on their CVs and during interviews, and can’t emphasise enough how important it is.
I know I’m not alone in coming up with elaborate new year’s resolutions that either get forgotten about within a matter of weeks or that weren’t achievable in the first place. If one of your new year’s resolutions is to find a new job, or if you have a gap in your team that you are determined to fill in 2018, consider your options carefully. By understanding your local marketplace you’ll discover the right salary levels and be better able to determine what competition you’ll be faced with. Only then can you make sure that a pipe dream becomes a reality in 2018!
