Hays Payroll Management, the leading recruiting expert, has seen employers boosting staff numbers within their payroll teams following the introduction of the right to request shared parental leave. Increased recognition of the importance of the payroll function, combined with the need to adapt to the new legislation, has led to the number of payroll jobs registered with Hays trebling in the past five years and reaching a record high.

The introduction of shared parental leave for children born after 5 April 2015 has led to a demand for temporary payroll professionals as businesses prepare to deal with leave requests and absorb this into the workload of the payroll department. In some cases, additional temporary staff have been taken on to support payroll teams where permanent employees are allocated to manage shared parental leave requests.

Helen Livesey, Business Director, Hays Payroll Management, said: “The new shared parental leave legislation is uncharted territory for employers. We have seen employers preparing their teams and making staffing provisions in order to process these requests. With some payroll systems not yet ready to handle shared parental leave requests, this will increase manual workloads for firms to ensure leave is processed accurately and correctly.”

Livesey continues: “The introduction of shared parental leave coupled with the next phase of auto-enrolment means the next few months will be a time of change across payroll functions. Employers are planning their staffing needs to fully equip their payroll teams with skilled individuals and prepare for these changes.”
