Birmingham recruiter completes London Marathon to raise vital funds for brain tumour research

On Sunday 13 April, a recruiter from Hays in Birmingham ran the London Marathon, raising vital research funds as part of the company’s two year partnership with The Brain Tumour Charity, the UK’s leading charity dedicated to fighting this devastating disease.

Tim Hall from Harborne works for Hays in their Birmingham office, and was inspired to take part when his oldest school friend and best man was diagnosed with a brain tumour in April 2013. Tim completed the marathon in 5.25 hours.

Tim said: “I was so proud to run for a charity so close to my heart, it’s such an important cause and the support I received in the run-up and on the day has been outstanding. I even managed some coverage on the BBC highlights and BBC breakfast news as Uncle Bulgaria overtook me on mile 25!”

Tim beat his fundraising target to raise £3,500 through generous donations from colleagues, friends, family and clients and boosted by office raffles, dress -down days and a fancy dress tea run with the managing director of Hays in the Midlands.

Hays aims to raise more than £100,000 over the course of the two year partnership to help fund a new centre of excellence which will be dedicated to carrying out world-class research.

Over 9,000 people are diagnosed with a brain tumour each year and brain tumours are the largest cancer killer of children and adults under 40 in the UK. 

The Brain Tumour Charity’s mission is to fund and promote research to improve the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of brain tumours and ultimately find a cure.

Louise Taylor, The Brain Tumour Charity’s director of fundraising, said: “We are grateful for all the efforts made by all of the Hays employees and thank Tim for running the London Marathon – we hope he’s  now enjoying a well-earned rest!

Only 2% of cancer research funding goes on brain tumours in the UK.  Our goal is to significantly increase research investment to improve treatments and ultimately save lives. 

“We rely 100% on voluntary donations to fund our work and it’s only through the efforts of companies like Hays and people like Tim that we will be able to do this and bring hope to the thousands of people who are diagnosed with a brain tumour every year.”

Tim was one of 90 runners who raised a total of £226,000 for The Brain Tumour Charity in this year’s marathon.

The charity is the largest dedicated funder of research into brain tumours in the UK and leads the way in ensuring all research funded is selected through stringent, independent peer review. 
It also offers a comprehensive support and information service to help everyone with a brain tumour, their families and carers to achieve the highest quality of life possible

Brain tumours – the facts
• Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40.
• Over 9,000 people are diagnosed each year with a primary brain tumour, including 500 children and young people – 25 people every day.
• Almost 5,000 people lose their lives to a brain tumour each year.
• Thousands more are diagnosed with secondary brain tumours, which are not recorded.
• Brain tumours are the largest cause of preventable or treatable blindness in children.
• Brain tumours reduce life expectancy by on average 20 years – the highest of any cancer.
• Just 14% of adults survive for five years after diagnosis.
• Childhood brain tumour survivors are 10 times more likely to suffer long term disability than well children.  This accounts for 20,000 additional disabled life years for all the children who are diagnosed each year.
• Research offers the only real hope of dramatic improvements in the management and treatment of brain tumours.  Over £500m is spent on cancer research in the UK every year, yet less than 2% is spent on brain tumours.
