INTERVIEWS GIVE UK WORKERS THE JITTERS

6 August 2013

Job interviews have always been nerve-racking and according to a survey by Hays, the leading recruiting expert, over two thirds of UK workers (70%) said panel interviews make them the most nervous. A survey of over 500 respondents asked UK workers what type of interview made them most nervous, 22% said telephone interviews put them on edge, while 8% said the more personal one-on-one interview made them nervous.

Steve Orr, Managing Director at Hays in London comments, “It is common that interviews can be the cause of sleepless nights across the UK but preparation is key in helping to deal with nerves and ultimately land the dream job. According to our survey, 70% said that panel interviews were the most nerve-racking. Making a list of potential questions and practising answers will help calm those jitters. Also remember, interviews should be two-way – they are an opportunity for you to quiz the interviewers about the job and company and find out if it is right for you too.”

Interview top tips:
• Do your homework – find out about the company, read trade magazines and visit competitors' websites
• Study the job specification, match it to your CV so you can provide evidence that you meet the
criteria
• Remember that you're making an impression as soon as you walk through the door
• Be factual and honest about your strengths and weaknesses. Show that you recognise your weaknesses and that you are striving to improve them
• If you get stuck on a question, do not dwell on it for too long but politely ask if you can come back to it later
