London’s workers too busy to look for a new job

Despite being keen to seek new work, London’s over-stretched employees appear to be too busy to look for a new job, according to new research by recruiting expert Hays. In the capital, 15% of workers not currently looking for work report that they aren’t looking for a job because it is too time consuming, while across Britain just 7% of people cite this a reason stopping them looking for a new role.

Overall, two-thirds (67%) of Britain’s working population are likely to move on if they were offered a better job, and almost half (49%) in London agree according to the new survey. This translates to around 1.8m people in London who would leave their current employer, despite the uncertain economic situation. Londoners are also the most likely in the country to be holding out for a pay rise or promotion (11%).

However, a third (33%) of workers who aren’t currently looking for a job aren’t doing so as they believe staying put offers more security in a turbulent job market than a new role. Just under one in five (18%) believe there are no jobs that require their skills and 18% think there is a lack of jobs in their industry, and 21% believe they would be unable to find a better-paid position. More than four in ten (42%) of people who aren’t currently looking for a job are staying because they actually like their current job. Workplace relations are clearly also under pressure, with a meagre 11% of workers not looking for a job saying they would miss their colleagues too much to leave.

James Lloyd-Townshend, Managing Director at Hays in the City, commented: “These results indicate just how much the capital’s workforce has suffered in recent years. Many workers are disillusioned, over-worked and don’t always appreciate that there are opportunities out there for talented people. London’s employers need to take urgent steps to re-engage and motivate staff, or they risk losing skilled and experienced workers. Many sectors are still looking for talented staff and there is good demand for people to work in positions across the City. The onus is on jobseekers to make sure they have the skills that are sought after by employers and can demonstrate that they are a solid investment.”

About the survey

All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. Total sample size was 1795 adults of which 143 were from London. Fieldwork was undertaken between 29th July-1st August 2011. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all GB adults (aged 18+).
