Hays works with local pupils to change their attitudes towards cover teachers

Hays Education, the leading recruiting expert, has been working with Severn Vale Secondary School to change the way local pupils perceive and work with cover teachers. Many students across the country lack an understanding about the important role cover teachers play in schools, which is why some students don’t have the same respect for them as for their regular teachers. In order to promote cover teachers in a positive light, Hays conducted imaginative assemblies with the help of Drama Teacher, Gary Lee, for all students at Severn Vale.

Toni Wadley, Senior Consultant at Hays Education, comments: “We are proud to partner with Severn Vale Secondary School to help local cover teachers gain more respect from pupils. We look forward to continuing to work closely with the school in the future and we hope all the children now understand the important role all teachers play and understand the importance of respect.”

Gary Lee, Drama Teacher, comments: “I think that seeing teachers out of their comfort zone and presenting them with the problems that cover teachers face on stage actually rang some bells for a lot of the pupils. Pupils often don't like change but it's a part of life and a valuable lesson for them. I realised the benefit of these assemblies when I had to cover a Year 7 class shortly after. They all recognised me, knew who I was and even remembered my stage name.”

David Page, Deputy Head at Severn Vale Secondary School, comments: “The assemblies have been very important in reinforcing the important role that cover teachers play in ensuring continuity of learning for students in the event of any staff absence. Our students have responded well to the assemblies and the clear messages they have delivered.”
