Newcastle professionals support non-executive directors

This week, over 50 of Newcastle's leading business professionals met to discuss the importance of non-executive directors in the North East, in a forum hosted by leading recruiting expert Hays and the Confederation of British Industries' (CBI) North East branch. The proportion of non-executives is lower in the North East than any other region in the UK, which is why the CBI and Hays were keen to promote the benefits they can bring to a business. The event was held at the Newcastle offices of Muckles LLP and representatives from leading local businesses were in attendance.

Speakers included two Hays non-executive directors; Paul Harrison, Group Finance Director at The Sage Group plc, and Richard Smelt, formerly the HR Director at Northern Rock, in addition John Josephs, North East Non-Executive Director of the Year 2009 shared his insight.

Peter Howarth, Regional Director at Hays, comments: "The seminar was a great way for professionals in the North East to learn about the routes into becoming a non-executive director and also discuss the benefits they can bring to companies, such as valuable independent advice and strategic guidance in order to facilitate long term business growth."

Speaking at the event, Paul Harrison commented: "A good non-executive director can bring invaluable and fresh insight into board discussions. The trick is to combine the right non-executive director, with the right business, at the right time. Potential non-executives should take time to evaluate the business they are considering, assess the people they will be working with and be able to add real value".
