I arrived in January 2008 with the goal of turning Tanbridge House into an ‘outstanding’ school. Important steps have been taken to ensure this vision becomes a reality.
In August Tanbridge House received their best ever GCSE results, + 75% A*-C, 6% higher than last year with some amazing individual achievements. The crucial A*-C figure including Maths & English also rose above 60% for the first time.
I wanted to offer Tanbridge House students the opportunity of a unique experience and initiated a exciting programme for students from Years 7, 8 and 9, giving them the chance of encountering their dream “profession” for the day. Aided by PMW, a Billingshurst-based media company, eight chosen students had their opportunity during the summer holidays. Declan Cusack, Year 8 fulfilled his ambition of experiencing a day in the life of a commercial pilot when he visited Virgin Atlantic.
Unlike work experience, our ambassadors had the amazing, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with some of the top people in their field and venture out into the most exciting of work places. The experience will no doubt inspire them when choosing the right career for the future.
Sporting Success continues to grow – so much so that during July a special Sports Awards evening was held at Tanbridge, sponsored by Horsham Junior Baseball Club, to celebrate the achievements of over forty students who, during 2008, had excelled in school, county, district, national or international sporting events.
Tanbridge House is not only improving standards and results but is committed to making the latest equipment and technology available to its students. During summer 2008 a significant investment was made to provide the most up to date technology throughout the school, with added investment in ICT, Maths, Music and English. Five information screens are in place around the school to keep all students fully informed and updated on school news. This summer four new industry-standard servers and seventy new computers were introduced to enhance students’ use of ICT across all subjects as befits our Specialist Status.
The specialist areas continue to flourish and have a strong and positive impact not only at Tanbridge but also on the wider Horsham community. Tanbridge is delighted to support the Y Centre Art Project and to offer IT classes to the community during the school holidays, in addition to giving master classes in Science, Mathematics & Computing to local primary schools.
The central courtyard saw the removal of two temporary classrooms which have been replaced with a much more appealing and eye-catching landscaped garden.
Performing Arts are a key part of the curriculum and every student has the opportunity to perform on stage in annual productions and concerts. Following the success of West Side Story in the summer students are now busy rehearsing The Taming of the Shrew.
The continued drive towards higher academic standards will continue, as will our emphasis on care, courtesy and respect. I am confident that new classroom practices and curriculum developments will allow all Tanbridge House students to fulfil their potential.
Come and meet us, feel the atmosphere and judge for yourself if you wish to share in our success.
