Application Forms

When filling out an application form the first thing you need to do is read the instructions carefully.  Read through the information a few times to understand what it is they are looking for and make a plan for each question.

Online forms

If the form is online write your answers in a word processing package first and save it in on your computer.  That way you will have a point of reference for all the applications you plan to complete and you can tweak your responses accordingly.  This will also allow you to spell check your answers and will ensure that your answers are backed up if there is a problem with the form.

Make sure you have all of the necessary information - have a list of key dates and qualifications handy this should save you some time.

Online forms can often be longer and more complicated then offline forms so check how many screens you have complete before you actually begin.  The benefit of completing an online form is many of the sites allow you to save your progress so you can complete the form in more then one sitting.  If you use this option make a note of any usernames or passwords.

Offline forms

If you’re a filling in a form by hand, try and keep your handwriting as neat as possible. Complete the form in black ink and block capitals if the form asks you to.

Take good care of the form keep it in a plastic wallet if possible, the last thing a potential employer would like to see is a poorly presented application form.

Final checks

  • Read it over a few times to check for spelling and grammatical errors – these are one of the most common reasons applications are rejected
  • Make sure you answered all questions that area applicable to you – if you leave a box empty an employer may think your form is incomplete.  If the question is not relevant, put N/A
  • Make a copy of the finished form, so you have a record of what you’ve put. It will be a useful reference point to refer back to it at the interview stage
  • Take note of the closing date and make sure your application is complete and sent in good time
  • Get some one to check proof read your work
