Thank you for showing an interest in our Schools. I hope you find the website useful and it provides you with all the information you need to know about The Federation and the departments for which you have an interest. Our vision is an exciting, innovative and challenging one that will be at the heart of the regeneration of East Basildon. In order to deliver our vision we need to appoint teachers who not only share our enthusiasm, aspirations and commitment but also bring recognition of the role we have in assisting young people in making the step change in the life chances available to them.
We are at present a large federation of two schools. From September 2009 we will be linked Academies. We recruit teachers each year; many are promoted very early in their careers. We value potential and commitment to new ideas and support innovative and creative staff who are seeking to make their mark.
The Federation and, in time, the Academies will have a strong focus on raising standards and the level of expectations of pupils. The decision to include Enterprise as one of our specialisms and to develop an Enterprise Zone illustrates our commitment to develop strong and practical links with the business and commercial world.
The creation of two federated Academies, one for 11-14yr olds and one for 14–19yr olds, will enable us to develop further our innovative, relevant and flexible curriculum and the organisation and delivery of outstanding teaching and learning.
The main focus of the Academies will be on creating the means by which all of our students take the opportunity to achieve their potential, and to be confident and enthused about their future.
Faced with a lot of choice and a mountain of paperwork to read from schools that you might be considering, what follows is just a brief guide to the kind of support we offer new teachers.
If called for interview candidates are invited to spend the day with us, touring the School, visiting classes and meeting other staff. You may be asked to teach part of a lesson; if so, you will be given notice of which class and the topic to be covered. In our experience, applicants welcome this opportunity to demonstrate their teaching skills and it gives them a chance to interact with pupils. Appointments are made on the day of the interview, with an opportunity for the debriefing of unsuccessful candidates.
Information and Communication Technology is fundamental to facilitating learning and as such the ratio of PCs to pupils is 1: 2, and a laptop is provided for school and personal use to all teachers. All teaching areas have Interactive Whiteboards.
We go out of our way to make candidates feel at home. Our staff are extremely friendly helpful and very supportive of each other. Ours is a very young staff whose average age is under 30 and we look after each other’s interests by informal networks of help and guidance. Within each school all teachers meet every morning for a briefing and the atmosphere in the staff room is buoyant. Applicants will see this for themselves when they arrive for interview.
Finally, taking up a new post – perhaps away from home in a different part of the country – is a big step. Finances play an important part, as does accommodation and transport. But you can be sure of helpful and expert advice from colleagues in the School.
I hope very much that you will be in touch, if only to find out more. We really are looking forward to hearing from you.
Mr A Roach
Principal of the Federation
Executive Principal of the East Basildon Academies
"The School is outstandingly lead by the Principal who is able to energise staff to succeed in all aspects of professional work they might not otherwise have considered doing. The School’s leadership of the Federation is a good example of innovative thinking, in this case to better the chances for all the pupils in East Basildon. Indeed the School works well with a range of other organisations to improve both it’s own performance and that of other schools. Chalvedon’s senior staff work hard with the Principal to promote the school’s vision."
