Overview

The Policy Officer will be responsible for mapping the requirements of the forthcoming Employment Bill against existing policies, ensuring compliance with new legal obligations. The role will also involve reviewing, updating, and developing internal People policies to ensure they remain legally compliant, aligned with best practice, and relevant to strategic and operational needs.

  • Monitor and analyse the provisions of the Employment Bill and related secondary legislation, mapping them to existing policies and assessing implications by identifying gaps, overlaps, and areas requiring change.
  • Draft, revise, and update People policies to ensure compliance with statutory requirements, best practice in governance, and organisational objectives.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across People and Culture, Legal, Governance, and senior leadership teams to ensure consistency and clarity in policy development.
  • Engage with individuals with lived experience where relevant, incorporating their perspectives to enhance the relevance, accessibility, and impact of policies.
  • Provide clear advice, briefings, and recommendations to senior leadership on policy changes required.
  • Lead internal consultation and engagement processes, ensuring staff and stakeholders understand and adopt updated and new policies.
  • Maintain an audit trail of changes to policies and contribute to effective policy governance and record-keeping.
  • Undertake other duties within the scope of the role as may be reasonably required.

Skills and experience required

  • Experience in policy analysis, development, and implementation.
  • Strong understanding of UK employment law and organisational policy frameworks.
  • Proven ability to analyse complex legislation and translate it into clear, practical policies.
  • Experience of engaging with stakeholders to inform and enhance policy development.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare accurate and concise reports and policy documents.
  • Strong project management and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise and deliver to deadlines.
  • Ability to build effective relationships and work collaboratively across teams at all levels.
Desirable
  • Previous experience working in a regulator or public body.
  • Knowledge of governance and policy-making processes in a regulatory context.
  • Experience using lived experience insights to inform policy.
  • Experience of analysing the Employment Bill and translating it into clear, practical policies.
