IT jobs in the housing sector

Arguably one of the most specialised areas of the public sector, housing has always been a challenging and rewarding area to work in. Rigid procedures and structures have gradually been eroded and flexibility is on the increase, meaning more IT jobs and higher salaries than ever.

Housing associations are non-profit-making organisations, run by committees which employ full-time staff to maintain day-to-day running. Over the last 20 years, housing associations have been taking over from traditional council housing, providing low-cost, affordable housing in safe environments.

Public sector IT jobs

Although often considered to be one of the more relaxed areas of the public sector in which to work, housing still has its 'public sector characteristics'. Accountability to local authorities, public enquiries and government watchdogs means that high standards do not only have to be maintained, but they have to be seen to be maintained too.

Government funding usually means fixed-term projects, so are there good opportunities for more senior IT positions . Capital investment projects are always starting up, and need people to come in and negotiate with external sources.

Anyone with systems implementation experience will be snapped up for interim contracts. The housing sector also has a lot of mergers and partnerships - both of which need good strategic thinkers who can coordinate people.

Information Technology professionals considering their options may be well advised to give a career in housing careful consideration. There are more IT jobs now than ever - this could be your chance to gain a niche IT skill in a booming market sector.
