Individuals working in claims jobs manage the assessment and processing of any claims made by a policy holder.
Other responsibilities of a claims handler include assessing the validity of any claims made as well as the extent of any possible payout, assessing the insurance policy holder’s liability where third parties are involved, and negotiating payment. The remit also includes the arrangement of any services the policyholder requires - for instance, arranging for a broken down car to be collected.
Claims handlers are typically expected to have a good understanding of FSA regulations, together with some experience of the sector they are working in. Employers are keen on a combination of good technical and soft skills.
Candidates are required to have a methodical approach to assessment. Empathy and good communications skills are also very important as claims handlers often need to communicate with any professionals involved in any reporting of an incident, such as to the police, as well as the policy holders themselves. Claims handlers must also be diligent and aware of any fraudulent claims being made.
