PA market overview and salary guide - Scotland

An overview of the PA jobs market in Scotland, including up-to-date salary figures for the private and public sector.

The PA & Secretarial jobs market has seen a greater level of activity since the start of 2011. Just 12 months ago the market was still static and the need to increase PA and Secretarial staff was low for organisations in decline. However, many organisations across the country are recovering and beginning to grow. As a result, there has been an emphasis in acquiring PA talent to ensure that business critical projects are fully supported.

Salaries

Typically salaries have fallen by approx £3,000 across all the majority of sectors. However, financial services organisations are still offering pre-recession salary levels. PA bonuses are now more based on company performance than individual performance levels and we have seen a reduction in benefits being offered by organisations. A PA to the CEO role in the private sector can see you earn up to £31,000 and the same role in the public sector can be rewarded with packages of up to £30,000 in certain areas of the country.

Sector focus
The restructure of various public service bodies has resulted in new opportunities for experienced PAs and secretaries. With an increase in those taking voluntary redundancy, organisations have experienced an increase in the departure of members of staff with significant lengths of service, resulting in new opportunities for external applicants. Permanent roles in the private sector have increase steadily since March, however, long term interim roles, particularly in the financial services sector remain.

Skills in demand
The vast majority of job specifications now request individuals with strong skills and experience across; diary management, travel, accommodation and visas, screening calls and correspondence, and minute taking.

Looking ahead
As the economy continues to grow we expect to see an increase in demand for highly skilled PAs. In general employers are still taking a long time over the recruitment process and it is essential that PAs factor this in when considering the next step in their career.
