Salary guide - North West

An overview of the PA jobs market in the North West, including up-to-date salary figures for the private and public sector.

The PA Secretarial market is experiencing a period of growth after heavy restructuring of support teams and redundancies during the previous 24 months. In particular there seems to be renewed confidence and growth in the legal and manufacturing sectors, which has led to an increased number of vacancies across both industries.

Salaries
Salaries have climbed slightly in the past 12 months with Executive Assistants commanding salaries of up to £45,000 in the private sector and £44,000 in the public sector.

Sector focus
Local and central government budget cuts have impacted the PA jobs market in the public sector with restructuring and redundancies. Traditionally we have seen a large amount of temporary roles in the public sector but this has reduced considerably. In the private sector, we have seen a larger number of permanent vacancies being registered which would suggest a renewed confidence in the investment of headcount. 6 to 12 months ago there was a higher proportion of temporary to permanent vacancies, where organisations were testing the market but not offering permanent opportunities.

Skills in demand

Employers are now keen to assess and test technical skills and systems knowledge at interview stage as many organisations are introducing online portals and new IT systems to drive cost efficiency when organising travel, IT support and office purchasing. Employers recruiting PAs are keen to attract candidates who not only have the traditional secretarial, administrative and organisational experience but the capacity and commitment to contribute more widely to organisational objectives; leading on projects, HR process, healthy and safety, planning and business development.

Looking ahead
The signs are that in the next few months the market will begin to grow. After the reductions of the past 12-24 months, organisations are beginning to stabilise and with attitudes towards PAs changing, we expect to see more PAs being taken on to support key business initiatives.
