PA market overview and salary guide - Yorkshire

An overview of the PA jobs market in Yorkshire, including up-to-date salary figures for the private and public sector.

The PA & Secretarial market has been moving forward steadily over the last year. With many organisations still making redundancies 12 months ago, the market has steadied and PA recruitment has picked up pace, particularly in the last 3 months.

Salaries
PA salaries have dropped on average £5,000 in the recession. This has improved slightly over the last 12 months, but salaries being offered by clients are still falling short of candidate expectations. Executive Assistants in the Yorkshire region now can command a salary of up to £38,000. Team PA salaries average £22,500, which is slightly higher than counterparts in the North East.

Sector focus
The financial services, legal, construction and property, retail, and manufacturing sectors have been the most buoyant in the region this quarter. However, public sector cuts are having an impact on the job market, with permanent and temporary opportunities remaining scarce.

Skills in demand
The majority of PAs have strong Microsoft packages skills as standard but we still see clients across all sectors request high competency levels across Microsoft Packages such as Project, PowerPoint, Excel and Word. We also continye to see requests for traditional shorthand and minute taking skills, particularly for PAs reporting into Board Level Directors.

Looking ahead
The signs are that in the next few months the market will begin to grow. After the reductions of the past 12-24 months, organisations are beginning to stabilise and with attitudes towards PAs changing, we expect to see more PAs being taken on to support key business initiatives.
