An overview of the PA jobs market in London, including up-to-date salary figures for the private and public sector.

The signs are encouraging for PAs in London. The number of PA jobs in London has increased consistently so far this year as organisations begin to add headcount in key support areas as they prepare for growth.

In the past year we have seen PA salaries in London steadily rise to an average of £35,000, up from £30,000 at the same point last year. This is due to a mixture of clients now giving those well-deserved pay increases that were put on hold during the recession, and of many organisations making the most of greater budgets.

Sector focus
The insurance, legal and energy industries have been more buoyant this quarter. However, public sector cuts are having an impact on the job market, with new opportunities remaining scarce, and the majority of public sector organisations using temporary workers to cover short-term workload peaks, rather than committing to permanent staff.

The private sector jobs market remains positive and we have seen nearly twice the number of permanent jobs registered with us in the first quarter of 2011 when compared to the same period in 2010. As more jobs come onto the market we are seeing more PAs in employment seeking new opportunities, another encouraging sign when compared to last year when the majority of jobseekers were out of employment.

Skills in demand
Many of our clients are now asking for graduates for roles that require a proactive approach in business-related elements, such as sitting in on meetings on behalf of the directors and following up on any actions required.  This should be very positive news for graduates who during the recession found it difficult to gain employment.  A career as a PA is now seen as a credible move for graduates who want to work at the highest level.

Looking ahead
The signs are that in the next few months the market will continue to grow steadily. After the reductions of the past 18-24 months, organisations have stabilised, and with PAs in many instances seen as essential support to organisational growth, we expect to see highly skilled PAs in demand.
