Newly qualified accountant jobs in the North West
Since the summer of 2010 we have seen a marked increase in jobs for newly qualified accountants across all industry sectors. Although it is not back to previous years' recruitment levels, there has been an uplift in the market for recently-qualified accountants who are looking for their first move from practice into financial reporting or corporate governance / audit related roles within larger corporates.
The SME market is lagging behind in, with the focus predominantly on industry trained commercial accountants.
Senior appointments in the North West
Whilst it is still a tough market at the senior end of the market, recent months have shown a marked improvement in the numbers and quality of senior job registrations in the North West within the SME sector. This has arisen with organisations looking to shore up their management teams with strong finance directors who can add significant financial and commercial value to their business.
On the other hand, large corporates have in the main kept the senior focus internal and promoted from within to avoid attrition. Many large companies across the North West had seen a period of restructure and cost cutting over the last few years and have subsequently focussed their efforts on developing talent internally. With a few exceptions, this market has seen little external movement.
Opportunities in accountancy firms
Whilst some practices are still facing difficult times, many have seen their clients’ business strengthen and as a result, demand is back for part and fully qualified accountants. The wider picture across the North West is that we have seen an increase in available roles right across the spectrum from Big 4 and mid tier, to independent firms of all sizes. Accountants with strong academics, first time passes and strong interpersonal / client facing skills remain in high demand.
Demand in Manchester remains strong for senior audit jobs, internal audit jobs and external audit jobs due to the large financial services marketplace. Specialist areas such as forensic and mixed portfolio internal audit (public and private sector) remain driven by experienced individuals. Top 10 firms in particular will look to expand their teams in this area if the right person raises an interest, as the expertise shortage is acute in the region. Lead and transaction advisory roles are becoming available again after a period of stagnation.
Accountancy jobs in manufacturing and accountancy jobs in distribution
In the past six months, demand for qualified accountant roles in the North West has focussed on the newly qualified and circa 5 years PQE levels. SME manufacturing is driving growth for financial controller jobs as specialist and niche producers see growth on the back of a poor global trading conditions and a weak pound. Meanwhile, larger distribution companies have been emerging as strong recruiters of newly qualifieds due to market consolidation and ongoing changes within the sector.
Overall, confidence is rising and roles are being created to strengthen teams that are looking to a brighter future. This should result in more opportunities arising at all levels as competition for the best candidates increases.
