Spotting different trends, sourcing and merchandising collections into specific categories: these are just a few of the responsibilities of an import merchandiser. This career choice offers a range of opportunities, with the next career step typically being senior merchandiser.
In this challenging retail job you will deal with a range of suppliers and factories and manage the critical path to ensure that all garments / products arrive at the right place and at the right time as scheduled. When asked about their typical day one merchandiser said, “My average day starts with some basic checks to see everything is up to date and from that moment you build on your lists of multiple tasks.”
Each day brings a new challenge, so being organised is essential. In this role you are constantly working to a number of small goals and when the products arrive at the correct time and right price there is a great sense of achievement.
When asked what the most difficult part of the role is, one merchandiser felt it was "Being reliant on other people; always having to check with buyers that things are done correctly and ensuring the suppliers are on to a tight schedule from their end."
As an import merchandiser you have to be aware of everything that is going on in the organisation, work well independently and within a team. You will also have strong attention to detail and have the ability to work well under pressure.
