Writing a CV

Advice on writing your CV when applying for an educational leadership position.

CV presentation

Keep your CV to 2.5 pages maximum. Remember it’s a punchy, self-aware sales tool, which tells people at a glance who you are, what drives you, what you are good at and what you have achieved.

Headings

  • Name and minimal contact details - put these at the top of your CV and keep them simple on 1 or 2 lines centred. Don't forget your email and your phone number!
  • Personal profile – a couple of sentences outlining your strengths, i.e. problem-solver, self-motivated, excellent communicator.

For example:

A Deputy Head who achieves her goals by drawing upon ten years experience working in three different Derbyshire Primary schools, along with excellent communication skills and confident team leadership.

The next sections need to exemplify these skills.

Work Experience – name of current employer; date; current role. If working in word I suggest you lay this out with a table (with the lines invisible) so everything lays out nicely.

  • Key responsibilities
  • Key achievements

Work backwards giving detail on your 3 most recent roles. Only summarise the earlier posts.

Interests

Don't's

Don't supply your references but write 'references available on request', don't tell them your dob or marital status although it is fine to supply this later when needed for compliance reasons. Don't use pictures or fancy fonts or graphics, unless you are applying for a job in graphics industry where it might be appropriate. Better to keep simple with Times Roman or Arial.
