IT jobs in the housing sector

More than 2,200 housing associations manage nearly 1.5m homes in the UK. The housing market comprises organisations that have links with their Council (Arms Length Management Organisations, or ALMOs) and profit making organisations (Registered Social Landlords, or RSLs).

Both represent enormous opportunities for career progression in an ever-evolving industry, as local authorities are actively encouraged to transfer their housing stock in Large Scale Voluntary Stock Transfers.

More than 150,000 people work in housing in the UK, usually in ALMOs or RSLs. Most technical skill sets are desirable; however, candidates with an understanding of housing management systems such as Northgate and Orchard are extremely sought after. Potential roles include: systems manager, networks manager, MI analyst and business report writer.

Hays IT’s Housing practice has strong relationships with many of the leading housing associations, including Great Places, Peabody Trust, Orbit Housing and Home Group. While technical skills are paramount, ‘softer skills’ are also expected, including the ability to work to your own initiative and under pressure, the ability to be flexible and adaptable within a variety of different situations, and an interest in developing new skills.

There is increasing demand for candidates who have private sector backgrounds and can bring their commercial awareness, often managing complex loans and overdrafts from banks and building societies and income from rents.
