The Prince’s Trust supports these disadvantaged young people across the UK, and for the last three years it has worked with the construction and business services sectors to open up their industry to young people who would otherwise not have such opportunities.
The Prince’s Trust runs ‘Get Into…’ courses, which are linked to the construction and property industries. The ‘Get into Construction’ programme comprises 2-4 week courses that enable young people to take their Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card and get a taster of the skills required in construction.
Hays Construction is a key partner in this initiative. We work closely with contractors of all sizes to give these young people the opportunity to take advantage of the skills they have gained from the course. Work can range from bricklaying for private developments to updating electrical wiring on social housing renovations, and the young people receive valuable on-the-job experience
Andrew Bredin, Managing Director of Hays Construction, says,” As a major recruiter for the construction industry it’s important that we play our part in helping the young people that go through the scheme the chance to actually take advantage of the skills they’ve learnt. By finding them work they have the chance to prove that they are up to the job.”
After they finish their original placement the employer can choose to take them on for further work if it’s available. Alternatively, graduates can look for a job elsewhere, confident that they can now demonstrate recent work experience and the commitment to learn new skills. Hays will try to find work at our partner employers but the scheme’s graduates are free to find work wherever they wish.
Our clients benefit from the opportunity to hire from the local unemployed population and give something back to the local community, with the added bonus of potentially finding a great new employee that they wouldn’t have found otherwise.
