James is an ambitious and motivated civil engineer with approximately 4 years of post-graduate experience in highways and bridges/highway structures. His post-graduate experience has enabled him to successfully sign-off many of the ICE development objectives required to achieve chartered engineer status which he is aiming to accomplish in the next few years. James is a graduate member of the ICE.
• Design experience – James has had the opportunity to carry out design and produce drawings for the construction of highways and bridges/structures schemes, for example parapet replacement and strengthening for a masonry arch bridge, cycleway realignment/reconstruction and construction of a new mass concrete retaining wall. He has consequently developed knowledge of various British Standards related to highways and also the Eurocodes for structural design as well as other processes such as design checking, road safety audits and maintenance audits.
• Construction/site experience - James has also had the opportunity to gain site-based experience, for example supervision of the replacement of the protective paint system for a 23-span highway bridge over a tidal estuary, construction of a new mass concrete retaining wall as part of a larger link road scheme, and supervision of the various smaller schemes for which he has had design input. This has increased his knowledge of construction techniques and therefore informed his choices and details when carrying out future design.
