Energy management jobs

Energy management jobs are concerned with conserving energy resources in one or more properties with a view to saving money and a more sustainable approach to the environment.

Jobs in energy management often exist within the public sector where local authorities are obliged to ensure a prudent approach. In larger organisations, energy management jobs will involve managing a team of technical staff who ensure that optimum energy and water conservation measures are taken. More senior professionals must therefore be able to motivate and manage their teams and delegate tasks effectively.

Energy management jobs will often require a substantial amount of inspection work and this means that a high level of attention to detail is key. Having reviewed the premises, an energy manager will then make recommendations on how to reduce consumption from additional insulation through to energy saving equipment and, in some cases, large scale building adaptation. A report will often be required and the ability to draft a concise, well written document is therefore very useful.

Develop professionally in energy management jobs

Jobs in energy management increasingly involve reducing the amount of solid fuels a company uses as part of a drive to move towards more sustainable sources. Work in this area will often have substantial budget implications and a commercial approach is essential if you are to build a strong energy management career.

Continuous professional development and a willingness to keep right up to date with the latest regulations is hugely beneficial and membership of an organisation such as the Energy Institute (EI), the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) or the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) and any special interest groups they may offer is therefore advised.
